8-12-11>>> This is a American Eagle Gold Bullion coin. a Twenty-Five dollar denomination coin is One Half-Ounce (1/2) of pure gold. The value is tied to the spot price of gold at time of sale. Right now it's $1,767.60 per ounce. Current value of this coin is $883.80. This price is a little less than you could buy it for and a little more than you could sell it for. But it gives you an idea of value. A 1986 $25 coin certified as MS-69 by a recognized grading service has a average retail value of $1,000.00. This is not a significant increase in value. Because of modern minting technology, high grade bullion coins are more common than most people think. NOTE: The spot price of gold and other precious metals changes by the minute when the market is open. So the value of this coin will go up and down.

The U.S. does not make gold half dollars. For one thing they'd be worth about $700 at today's prices and not even the most boneheaded bureaucrat would make a coin that lost the gov't 699.50 on each one. Simply put, you have an ordinary cupro-nickel half dollar that was plated for use in jewelry or similar. To a collector it's a damaged coin worth 50 cents only.
