I (*thought) I got my Smith Corona Ultrasonic Portable Electronic Typewriter With One Touch Memory Correction in 1975 when I quit work and was a SAH mom. I missed my (work) typewriter so my husband got this for me. At the time it was suppose to be able to be used as a computer printer (just needed the [costly] cable, which I'm not sure was actually available at that time--or ever?)
*I don't see any dates in my owenr's manual, but I have a separate sheet showing the different printwheels typestyles and it states "effective 7/1/82" SO maybe I got it in the early 80's. I just had this typewriter out to let the granddaughters play with it and I see that the black foam (maybe for noise insulation) inside the carriage area has gone bad and when touched it collapses and turns to a glob of grease.
nothing, its a type writer, and its not all that old
Small letter l represents the number 1.
To change the correction ribbon on a Smith Corona typewriter, first, turn off the machine and open the top cover. Remove the old ribbon by carefully lifting it off the spools, then place the new correction ribbon onto the spools, ensuring the correct threading path as indicated in the machine's manual. Finally, wind the ribbon a few times to ensure it is properly seated, and close the cover before testing the typewriter.
To change tabs on an old Smith-Corona portable typewriter, first locate the tab set lever, usually found on the right side of the machine. Move the lever to the desired position to set a new tab or press the tab key to advance to the next tab stop. To clear a tab, simply press the tab set lever down and slide it back to the left to remove the tab. Ensure to test the tab function by typing a line to confirm the spacing is correct.
Some words you can use with "typewriter" are keyboard, ribbon, keys, and vintage.

Born in Portland, Oregon, Smith formed a love of reading and writing early in his life. As he noted on his Web site, he received one of the most memorable presents from his parents for his fifth birthday: "My parents gave me an old manual typewriter that weighed more than I did! It was my favorite possession. I spent hours in my room clacking away on that old typewriter. Of course, when I was five, I didn't know how to spell and I barely knew how to read, but I loved the sound and the look of the letters on the crisp white paper."
