A mouse's sense of smell is thought to be the most potent of the five senses. The key to their communication, family composition and social dominance lies in a wide range of pheromones, and olfactory social signals. By sensing the territorial markings of other mice, they are able to speed up or retard sexual maturation in the juvenile females, to synchronize reproductive cycles in the mature females, and to even terminate pregnancies. Smell is also important for survival, alerting mice to both food and predators. The mouse therefore has quite a highly developed sense of smell.
