Do you mean the logo? Because the Starbucks logo was based on the charicter "Starbucks" from the book Mobie Dick. They recently changed the logo though.

It depends on what you mean by "the news". Anyone can cover a news story because the information is not copyrighted. However, a news article is a published work and may be copyrighted. (That is, unless the author explicitly releases it into the public domain.)

One thing to be careful of, many logos are available online for "free download" but this does not mean that they are free to use and reproduce.
