The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation has hired a private agency, IL&FS, to prepare a project report to replace the 150-year-old Monda Market in Secunderabad with multi-storied complexes.

The corporation had plans to modernise five municipal markets and prepared project reports. But problems relating to rehabilitation of tenants were the main reason for delaying its implementation. Now GHMC officials have shifted their focus to Monda Market.

"The plan is to construct each block in a phased manner so that retailers are not displaced," said the GHMC chief engineer, Mr Dhan Singh. "They will be accommodated in the new buildings."

He added that the GHMC was also ready to take up the project on its own using funds from Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission if no contractor came forward.

However, the GHMC has not initiated any discussions with the vegetable vendors so far. Comparing with other muncipal markets, Monda Market has more number of retail vegetable vendors.

"Let them meet us and we will discuss the pros and cons of the project," said a vendor.
