Leonardo d Vinci left many drawings of gliders and aeroplanes, which would have worked fairly well had he had 20th century technology available. The Montgolfier brothers in late 18th century achieved flight, but used hot air balloons which were unsteerable.

In Dec 1903, Orville and Wilbur Wright put an internal combustion engine onto a glider and created the worlds first steerable aeroplane.
