"Poison" is defined by the Department of Transportation (DOT) as anything with an LD50 Oral Rat less than 200 mg/Kg. Toxic is defined by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) as anything with an LD50 Oral Rat less than 500 mg/Kg and acutely toxic substances have an LD50 Oral Rat less than 50 mg/Kg.

After scanning several MSDSs at the site below, it appears that none of the Lysol(R) brand products would, by themselves, be toxic by definition. Some preparations do contain phenol which has an LD50 Oral Rat of 317 mg/Kg. Phenol is, therefore, toxic by definition but the formula that contains a small percent of phenol would not necessarily be toxic.

Probably the greatest risk is not from being poisoned, but from the corrosive effect from those formulas that contain sodium or potassium hydroxide. There are a few MSDSs that warn against inducing vomiting if ingested because of the tissue damage that would result. Find your product and read the MSDS. Everything can kill you...there was a woman who recently died from drinking too much water. It is good advice to avoid drinking Lysol.

Will Lysol disinfect poison oak?

Lysol is designed to disinfect surfaces and kill germs, but it is not specifically formulated to treat plants like poison oak. While it may kill some of the surface spores, it won't effectively remove the urushiol oil that causes allergic reactions.
