By early 1991, U.S. computers were invaded by hundreds of foreign virus strains and corporate PC infection was becoming a serious problem. Symantec's Norton Group launched Norton AntiVirus 1.0 (NAV) for PC and compatible computers. Ads for the product, with suggested retail $129, featured Norton in his crossed-arm pose, wearing a pink shirt and surgical mask covering his nose and mouth.

History of Norton Antivirus: The Norton AntiVirus is offered for sale as a product by itself. It means that it can be installed in computers as a program. This product is also sold as a component of other Norton software program. Norton Internet Security and Norton SystemWorks includes the antivirus program as one of their programs. The NAV was developed by Symantec Corporation. It detects and removes viruses, spyware, adware, and other possible risks to computers. NAV was first released in 1990. The NAV was incorporated with its main competitor in 1994. The era rival was the Central Point Anti-Virus or the CPAV. Likewise, CPAV was licensed as the Microsoft Anti-Virus utility. The latest edition of the Norton software is the Norton AntiVirus 2009 version. The Norton AntiVirus is the fourth most popular among 289 products. When you first bought a computer it should come with CDs to repair/reinstall your computer. You need those CDs to reset your computer again to new state. If you don't want to, you can download Anti Virus Programs, such as Norton. But please keep in mind that not all Anti Virus can remove all of your viruses, some of them can be virus made programs itself.
First off in my opinion you have poor virus protection. It is a resource hog and not one of the best to start with. I will probably get slammed for that statement, but it is my opinion based on computers I have seen get a virus while running Norton. Limewire is a peer to peer sharing program. Anytime you share files, there is always the possibility of getting a Virus, Trojan, Spyware, etc. If you insist, just remember to always save the file to a dedicated downloads folder. Scan that file with Norton before you ever move it to your music files. Now if you insist on paying for protection then I would recommend http://www.trendmicro.com/en/home/us/personal.htm But is you want to save your money then here is what I have been using for 2 virus free years. It is free to home users and is very user friendly and updates every 6 hours. http://www.avast.com/i_kat_207.php?lang=ENG Your money, your choice. there is a version of limewire that is clean go to spybot search and destroy website the list which programs like limewire are best FYI my son put a copy of Limewire on my system a few years ago and I literally could not clean it up and had to wipe and reload the drive, if you remove Norton (and I would) go to add/ delete programs remove what you can and then do a search on "Norton removal tools" I personally use pctools spyware doctor with anti-virus , it catches trojans faster than any virus software I have ever seen , or use it with out anti-virus (spyware is a bigger problem) I like ESET NOD32 small footprint good price also remove norton BEFORE loading the new stuff the other products do not like the norton removal tool
There are several good free virus protection programs available for download. My personal suggestion would be to try AVG's free virus protection. There are several downloadable anti-virus programs for free. Try http://www.avg.com/us-en/homepage or http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/Utilities/Anti-Virus_Utilities/Norton_Antivirus.html.
Use a Anti-Virus such as AVG internet secuirty, or malwarebytes. It is easy to find free anti virus programs too. It's just that the paid ones are usually the better way to go if it is a well-trusted company.
It's essential to have antivirus for your computer because it will stop virus from infecting your computer. I recommend AVG, here's a link to its download: free.avg.com/us-en/free-antivirus-download
Check out their website or see more here http://www.mcafee.com/apps/downloads/security_updates/dat.asp?region=us&segment=enterprise
More details on the problem: The virus blocks anti-virus and anti-malware sites. It disables Google links. It causes really bad internet lag. I can't use an Anti-Virus CD because my CD-ROM drive is broken. So that's why I also cannot just wipe and re-install windows. Another thing it does is will play odd background noises, as if it's picking up a TV station or something. Also noises that sound like typing. It will also cause the computer to freeze, or just go so slow that I have to restart. Usually it takes a few times of turning it on before it will correctly start up as well. I believe it may be a variation of a virus called "Anti-Spy wear soft". Try running your computer in safe mode upon start up [Here's a link as to how to do this: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Start-your-computer-in-safe-mode] and run your anti-virus from there.
