Read Only Memory (ROM) is non-volatile. Basically, the computer manufacturer write coding onto the ROM chip that will start up the computer, but which the user is not expected to interfere with.
The volatile memory is the Random-access memory (RAM), which is wiped clean on shut down unless the data is first saved to the hard drive, etc.
