Here is my personal experience with the Atom N270 cpu...
I purchased an eMachines em250 netbook which includes the Atom CPU. It came with Windo*s 7 starter (which I upgraded to Home Premium), and used for several months before switching to Ylmf-OS Linux. The computer does everything I need it to do, and performs quite well! The little CPU (with the Intel 945G based graphics) can handle 3D games fairly well, for example Freespace, Babylon 5:IFH, GLTron, and The Babylon Project. Web browsing is quite speedy, DVD playback from my external drive is smooth, as is video playback from any of the Tube sites, and Hulu. The Hulu stand alone application and Windows Media Center work OK, though the interface seems a little bit slow to respond at times.
Once I made the switch to Linux, I found that the CPU seemed to perform DRAMATICALLY better. Overall system responsiveness has improved by a factor of 4 times. The computer is hooked up to an external 24 inch HD display, and I can watch a movie on one screen while web Surfing on the other one. Overall, I would rate the Atom as a very good value as CPUs go.
