Yes for the PS2 for the PS3 you can have WiFi or an ethernet cable
Ethernet cards are built for Ethernet Cable only. If you are willing to connect to the internet via Desktop, you will either need a network wifi adapter which is an I/O item or you can get a wifi card that you will have to manually input witin the desktop case itself and in my opinion, that is the best way to go.
WIFI and ETHERNET

You need to access the internet from your PS3 to go to the PlayStation network from your PS3. It does not have to be WiFi it can also be ethernet cable, but nothing else
PS3 must connect with a DSL or Cable broadband using WiFi or Ethernet cable only. The new PS Vita will connect with WiFi or for some models 3G when it is released on February 15 2012
