If the dead rat was in between the walls, then you will find that, once the carcass dries up that the smell will go away. Removing the wall board and replacing it is an option, but it is often hard to isolate just where the dead critter is. You can alleviate the odor in the room using vinegar, or alternatively purchasing and enzyme spray from a janitorial supply store.
Quite far away, my Yorkshire Terrier can sence my mum and dad from far away when there out, he can tell when there are comming back, but I don't know if that's got anything to do with smell or hearing.

I have not found anything that gets rid of the oily smell. My lab only gets this smell in the summer when he is swimming all the time. A bath only seems to make it worse. I don't think there is an instant cure. Over time the smell goes away.
