Mouse on my laptop wont work?

If you mouse has stopped working on your laptop you might of disabled it by accident. If you have function keys on your laptop(Usually a blue key that says Fn) Look on the F keys(very top row of keys) for a little picture that looks like a touch pad and hold down your function key and press that. That should re enable it if you accidently disabled it. If it really did stop working you might be able to get it replaced by contacting your laptop manufacturer and see if they cover it. If not the Geek Squad could probably fix it. I don't really like them but use them as a last resort.

The answer here highly depends on whether this mouse worked before or if it never has. Not all USB devices are compatible with all computers (!!). Sometimes they just plain don't work.

However, in the vast majority of cases, they should. If you have a laser mouse, plug it in and see if the red laser shines out of the bottom (don't look directly into the laser, just lift the mouse a little and see if you can see a glow).

If it doesn't light up to indicate power, plug it into another computer or other USB ports. If the mouse never lights up, it's likely the mouse. If it lights up on one USB port and not the other, the USB port is likely damaged.

If you have only one computer and the mouse doesn't work on any USB ports, get another USB device of some kind that is NOT the same brand as the mouse. Plug a few devices into the ports. Do you get a prompt from your operating system or some kind of noise indicating the computer realizes something was just plugged in?

If yes, it is likely you need a new mouse. If this is an expensive mouse (like a gaming mouse) you likely can send it in for warranty to the company you bought it from but check to see if there is a driver update first!

I have recently had a customer complain their computer was broken "because the mouse that works on my other computer doesn't work on this one" but, upon investigation, it turned out that the very expensive gaming mouse she was using needed an updated driver to work with windows 8.1.

If no devices make any noise, show up or get any response from your computer, turn the computer off and restart it. Try again. Anything? If nothing happens your motherboard may be damaged or your USB drivers may have been accidentally disabled. This is much less likely than the possibility that your mouse has died.
