You can't open a Windows Movie Maker project (MSWMM) file on another computer. Even if the project is opened on a computer using the Windows Movie Maker program, the original source filescannot be located (since the originals for the project are on another computer)
If you want to view your WMM project on another computer... you have to Publish/Finish it first.

I dont think that you will lose the projects. The project files are saved on your computer. after upgrading the software, it will pick up the files from the same location. In my case, I once uninstalled the filmora from my computer. After few days, I re-installed it with upgraded filmora X. when I click on open projects, I found the old projects which I created with filmora 9 also. So i think, upgrading will not make any effect on saved projects.
