You have a virus. It can be easily solved (temporarily) by Going to Task MAnager (Ctrl+Alt+Shift) and under the "Applications" tab go to "new task" and type in "explorer.exe" (without the "). IM not sure if these steps are correct for your laptop. Note: this doesnt get rid of the virus!!!!!!!!!!
the desktop is the thing that you see when you start your laptop with the icons etc. the laptop is the computer (portable)
Right click the desktop, hold the cursor on the VIEW option an uncheck "show desktop icons" then to the samething again and re-check the "show desktop icons" option, as far as what causes it i dont know but this seems to work

Why it's disappeared - I cannot say (as I don't know what you did to remove it !) - However.... to get it back :- Click... Start Control Panel Personalization Desktop Icons Tick the 'Computer' box Click Apply Click OK That will restore the 'My Computer' icon back to the screen.
if you go to your start tab you can select control panel and there are options in there for just about every user interfaced programs.
1) You could have accidentially changed some accebility setttings or 2) You might have changed a setting by mistake. If you have windows vista... -For desktop icons right click on your desktop, goto "view" and select the size of the icons you want. -For your start menu right click on your task bar and goto "properties". Click on the "Start Menu" Tab and select "Customize" For "start menu" scroll down to the bottom of the list and uncheck "Use large icons" For "classic start menu" Scroll down to the second to last item and check "Use small icons in start menu" -For anything else, just reset your theme. (Right click on your desktop and select "personalize" Then click on "theme" Select the one you want and hit ok)
Depends on your version of Windows, actually, but it's found under the Desktop Icons settings in Control Panel (In Vista and 7, that would be Control Panel, Appearance and Personalization > Personalization > Change desktop icons).
