On an iMac when the Macintosh HD disk icon is no longer under the devices list in finder and is not present on the desktop where would it be or how would you go about finding it?

If the iMac is listed under Devices you can select it, and the hard disc will be listed in the finder window. You can then drag the hard disc icon back into the Devices section. Although there is no real need to have such access to the hard disc with Mac OS X.

Alternatively you can select Computer from the Desktop/Finder's Go menu (Shortcut: Shift Command C) which should open a finder window with the hard disc shown.
