If it's a lightning storm, Your laptop is powered by an inline transformer as part of the power cord so, in theory,if lightning hits your house it will destroy the transformer first before hitting your laptop.
At the very least, in theory, if you lose power in any storm, a power surge from the power being turned back on hits your transformer and destroys it first and not get as far as the laptop.
Either way you can't be hurt from a storm just by using your laptop if your NOT connected to the power cord if your in your house or building.

Personally, I would get a macbook pro. I have one (the 13 inch one) and it is really good. I really didn't like the macbook white being - white and I didn't like the shape either.
