Existing text is replaced with the text being typed in the "Overwrite" mode. (As opposed to the insert mode)
you can change and format large amount of text in seconds, add pictures, insert text anywhere in document, check spelling and grammar errors, delete text, replace text and so on.
You have the "INSERT" key engaged. When the insert function is on anything you type will replace what appeared on the page.
Document Window
It allows you to insert text at the insertion point. The default is to replace text when you type someplace in the middle of a word, but if you press the insert key, you will insert instead of replace with the text you type.
In the Text group on the INSERT tab, the "Object" button can be used to insert one document into another. By clicking on this button and selecting "Text from File," you can choose a document to embed within the current document. This allows for seamless integration of content from different files.

When you have a word, sentence, or paragraph you don't want, you can:backspacehighlight it all and click delete or Enter (easiest to do)Turn on Insert and type over the old text (most confusing to do)
To insert a portion of text at the top of the document, you have double click on the top and then a section called header will come up. Then you type the text in that section. This text will come at the top of every page you work on after.

The insert menu is for inserting various things like shapes, tables, pictures, charts, headers, footers text boxes etc into a document. Click on the insert menu and have a look. Try to insert a table it is not hard to do.
