In older versions of Word, you can use the Insert or Ins keys on your keyboard to switch between modes. In the newer versions you might have to add the button manually. You can add the button to the quick access toolbar.

You have to click on the down arrow at the end of the Quick Access toolbar (the one with the Save button on it), then choose More Commands, then from the Choose commands fromdropdown menu, select Commands Not in the Ribbon. Scroll down to the Os (the list is alphabetical) and you will see the Overtype option. Select it so that it is highlighted, and then click the Add button. Then it will be on your menu, and you should be able to use it to switch between overtype and insert modes.
