This might be possible, yes. Much of this depends upon the graphics chipset and driver in use on your laptop. Many laptop graphics cards will allow you to use the laptop display panel as well as an external monitor at the same time. You may need to update your video drivers if you do not see the options to do that when you look at your display settings.
WIndows should recognize that another external monitor is attached. IF will run it with a generic driver which may not be the most suitable. IF you have the driver install it.
