Seeing as you are using one now to post this question and everyone has one in their pocket, I say it was very successful. Many corporations (not just Microsoft, but apple, Intel, Ibm, etc.) have profited from computers. The change the way we share information. They simplify our lives with ease of access to the most vital information at moments notice. We can talk to someone from the other side of the globe while anywhere at all. And Microsoft is developing HoloLens, so that our virtual world is blended within our real one.
I would say the computer was very, very successful.
