In the 1960's there were no personal computers, and computers were used only by large, wealthy organizations, mainly banks and governments. Banks had a form of computerized accounting in which punched cards were used to keep track of individual accounts. Governments needed to do calculations for such things as the Apollo space program. Most people never saw a computer, in that decade. Few people even had calculators, which were just being introduced at the end of the decade. Adding machines existed, but they too were large, expensive, and clumsy to use. It was the dawn of the computer age.
