ASCII stands for American Standard Code for Information Interchange. A computer only understands numbers, so letters of the alphabet are assigned numbers. ASCII is a set of numbers for letters of the alphabet, digits, punctuation, and some other things. It is largely being replaced by Unicode, which is a numbering system that handles all the alphabets of the world.
