You can use Fill Patterns to fill in things like cells or parts of a chart etc. Instead of using a standard colour you can have the fill with patterns such as diagonal lines or dots or chequered patterns and so on. You can also mix the colours for these patterns.
Open the Format Cells dialog box by pressing Ctrl - 1. Then you can find it on the Patterns tab.
The fill handle can be turned off in the Excel options, though it is more useful to have it on.
