There are a number of components in a USB Flash Drive, but the main part is the Flash Chip.

There are 3 major players in the market - Samsung, Hynix and Toshiba

There are also a few other significant companies such as Intel and Micron.

Companies such as Apple use the same flash chips (mainly from Samsung) in their Ipods/Iphones.

Two companies were first to sell the USB flash drive. Commercially avaliable in 2000, Trek Technology sold the "ThumbDrive" and IBM sold the "DiskOnKey"; both had a storage capacity of 8 MB.

In the same year, Lexar introduced their own USB flash drive. However, all USB flash drives on the market were first generation models and not as fast as the now common USB 2.0. In comparison to the Floppy Disk, though, USBs were much faster and held 5 times more data.
