there are 2 diffferent styles of the 25 pin connectors on the back of a pc. One is called the male gender which can be identified by gold colored pins sticking out and are layed out in 2 rows- top row has 13 pins and second row has 12 pins. the other style is layed out the same way,however, it is called the female gender and all you can see is 25 holes instead of pins. The male connector is used for "serial" type of communication where the coded information is sent to another device using 1 wire in the cable to send information and 1 wire to receive information from another device. the other wires in the connector are used for control of data back and forth between devices. This was the first way devices communicated bi-directionally with each other. The female connector is used for "parallel" style communication and is usually only used to send data to a printer.
