The male connector is used for "serial" type of communication where the coded information is sent to another device using 1 wire in the cable to send information and 1 wire to receive information from another device. the other wires in the connector are used for control of data back and forth between devices. This was the first way devices communicated bi-directionally with each other. The female connector is used for "parallel" style communication and is usually only used to send data to a printer.
