What are the advantages of using a word processing program?

Advantages:

Disadvantages:

• requires a computer (and electrical power) to write
• data can be lost by a computer malfunction
• requires a computer or printer to view document
• certain languages (esp. Asian languages) require hundreds of symbols not easily accessed on a keyboard
• symbols and equations are easier to write than create on a computer.
• If the power goes off you can't do it any more. That's about it.

The advantage is that 90% of all companies use it. The disadvantage is that it is expensive.

If you download the free "Open Source" program called Open Office (it runs on Windows, Apple and Linux) you will see that it not only does 95% of everything Word, Excel and Powerpoint does, but it will read, and save to, Microsoft Office data file formats. Admittedly it isn't as pretty as Windows Office but it is certainly as functional and this should be all you want.

I am a journalist and have been using Open Office for years.

With the world's economy collapsing, saving £300 could be important.
