Depends on your version of Office. In Office '07 there is the office logo at the top left hand of the screen, which will bring a drop down menu, and you can select OPEN DOCUMENT. In earlier versions, it's the same process instead of clicking the logo, you will click FILE>OPEN

You can also use the hotkey combination CTRL+O Ctrl and O at the same time, will bring up the open document window. Keep in mind, you cannot open '07 documents in older versions without it being converted first.

Here are steps to create a document in MS-Word.

1. Open the program and wait until it fully opens.

2. If it does not load to a blank white page (which it should), click the "Paper" on the left side of the top tool bar.

3. When you have the blank page, it will have "New" at the top (across the tool bar area). You need to save the document using File > Save As.

First, this will give your document a unique file name that you chose. Second, if the program crashes, you'll be able to recover it from the beginning. Make sure you put your file under My Documents, or into a folder that you'll remember later.

4. If you need to set different margins, go to File > Page Setup. Note: The settings should be Default. You can change these and change them back if you want.

5. Begin to type. You can use Tab to move text over, such as for a return address in a letter. You can use Center to put text centered on a line. You can also use BOLD and Italics but you shouldn't overuse those commands. You can also select Font Size. Size 10 or 12 is a Default setting.

6. After every couple paragraphs, hit save. Go to File> Save.

7. Resume your typing, and save frequently.

8. If you need to stop or you finished your writing, again go to File> Save.

9. If you need to add to your Saved Document, you can go to the Filename in My Documents (or wherever you saved to) and double click the file. That will open the program and the file.

OR

Word saves the link for the last 4 most recent documents you had open. So you can open the program, and click your file's name from under the File area on the Toolbar (top left).
