Computer motherboards can be damaged by a number of things. Such things include age, physical abuse, moisture, heat, static discharge, power surges, and lightning strikes.

A motherboard contains capacitors, and when the board ages, its capacitors can explode, swell, or leak. Power surges and lightning are bad for any electronics devices. Heat is an enemy which can destroy semiconductor components. Moisture is another possible problem, and if it condenses inside of the ICs, they may explode, just like how popcorn works.
