Rats can be difficult to eradicate. They are very smart and learn by observing each other. It's been said that if a rat sees another caught in a trap, it will avoid the trap and it will be next-to-impossible to catch the rest of them with the same device. Likewise, they watch each other to see if one suffers ill effects from eating various foods; poison baits, therefore, need to be slow-acting so that all of them ingest enough of the bait to get a fatal dose without getting suspicious.
