Windows Defrag can stop running if you have a DLL error or registry problems. Re-installation of Windows would probably be the easiest way to fix this. Or, you could download a more powerful and faster defragment tool like UltimateDefrag.

Disk Defragmenter
Disk Defragmenter
To open Disk Defragmenter, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Disk Defragmenter.
Notepad and disk defragmenter do not use the same resources. However, Notepad can be used to open disk defragmenter from the system file.
disk defragmenter
start--> all programs--> Accessories--> System tools--> Disk Defrag
Go to Start then all programs, put your mouse on accessories then system tools and click on Disk Defragmenter. It moves around files on your disk so that they are not so spread out so your disk has to spin less.
If you have a Windows system, there is already a disk defragmenter installed onto the computer. Just click on the Start button and in the search box enter "disk defrag". Click on the program labeled Disk Defragmenter. To be able to defrag a disk, you need administrator rights.
The Disk Defragmenter can be found by pressing the windows button + R and then type "dfrg.msc" without the quotations.
Click "START" > "Programs" > "accessories" > "System Tools" > "Disk Defragmenter"
Disk Defragmenter is a very slow program on most computers so it is reccommended that you do not open programs while it is running, or else there is a high risk of crashing your computer. It makes disk defragmenter goes even slower, which would probablly result in crashing the computer.
