In older versions it will activate the menu system. From Word 2007 onwards it activates the shortcut key options for some activities that would have been on the menus, allowing continuity for users that would have used them.

CTRL+ALT+TAB on most windows 7 machines stays even when you stop pressing key and wait for confirmation of windows selection. ALT+TAB switches instantly and is not waiting for confirm (mouse click on icon or RETURN key);
If you're using Microsoft Word: Ctrl and F2 (whilst still pressing the Ctrl key). Alt - F - V will also work.

The Alt key (pronounced /ˈɔːlt/) on a computer keyboard is used to change (alternate) the function of other pressed keys. Go to the Insert tab and then Shapes and it can be found in one of the sets there. Pressing the Alt key and on the Numeric keypad only, press 3 and then let go of the Alt and you will get ♥.

This is usually related foreign currency or punctuation £ ¿ è and the like. Keyboards which feature an ALT-GR key will usually show an alternate character on some keys, often in another color, pressing ALT-GR plus these keys will produce those characters. The ALT-GR can in some cases be substituted on keyboards with an ALT-GR key by pressing both the ALT key and CTRL key.
Many Microsoft products use this as a standard behavior.

You can Hold the Alt key while pressing tab (Alt+Tab) to flip through the running windows.
They show you keys that you can use to activate those menus and items on menus. Pressing and holding the Alt key and then the F key will open the file menu. Pressing X then, would select the Exit option and close Excel. Alt activates the menu bar. You can use these keys to do things quickly. Alt - E - C is Alt, Edit menu, Copy option. So the underlined letter is the letter you type to select that particular option.
