There are a number of different meanings. "Twain" can be an archaic version of the number "two"; Mississippi riverboat pilot Samuel Clemens used the pen name "Mark Twain", meaning that the river was at least two fathoms deep.

TWAIN is also the name of an imaging interface between scanners and computers. Most scanners come with "TWAIN drivers" that will allow the computer to cause the scanner to scan an image. In this context, the name "TWAIN" has no underlying meaning; various sources claim that the name "TWAIN" was derived from a poem by Rudyard Kipling in "Barrack Room Ballads" when he wrote "Oh, East is East, and West is West, and never the twain shall meet." In that context, computers and imaging devices are so different that it takes some effort to get them to communicate.
