ATX is still the standard for most motherboards while the BTX was thought to take the place of the ATX form factor it wasn't as swift as people has thought. ATX is most popular still since a drawback with the Pentium 4 processor and thermal problems.

Form factors are standards in computer design, they define the shapes of the motherboards and how they will fit into a computer case. ATX and ITX (and their variants such as Mini-ATX, Mini-ITX) are taken into consideration in the design and manufacture of computer cases which must support the motheboards that have these form factors. Some form factors are better than others for certain tasks. For example ATX motherboards can fit a lot of components, whereas something like Mini-ITX is more suitable for media center PCs where smaller size and fitting it onto a TV stand is desired.
