For Computers worldwide:If the file does not have a file extension on it when you click/double click it will no-longer open with it's default/correct program, and it will ask you to manually choose a program to open it with.

For example if I changed "mytext.txt" (Opens in NotePad) to "mytext" it will not recognise a default program to open it in and I would have to choose to open it in NotePad manually.

This does not damage your file if done but opening the file with the wrong program will cause problems.

In the US of A:

Tax payers need to "file for an extension" if they cannot pay their taxes by the 15th of April each year. "Filing an extension" allows them more time to get the need funds to pay any taxes they may owe to the local or federal governments.
