Water

The type of cooling system varies. In most computers, it is air-cooled. The air is often forced by a fan, but not always. Sometimes heatsinks alone are enough cooling for certain components, and the cooling is completely passive. In homemade PCs, the builders may install large heat sinks with heavy-duty fans attached.

PCs built for extreme gaming performance are sometimes water-cooled. The system operates in a fashion very similar to an automobile cooling system. There is a water jacket mounted to the CPU, and there is a water pump, coolant reservoir, radiator, and radiator fan. The heat is pumped away from the CPU into the radiator where the fan cools the radiator, and the cooled water returns to the water jacket on the CPU.
