Oxygen is a gaseous element, a component of air, that is used in the life cycle of living things. It also reacts with other elements to form many inorganic compounds and minerals. Oxygen in the air reacts with metals to form oxides, such as hydrated iron oxide, which is rust, and the tarnish on silver and copper. It also provides energy through the oxidation (burning) of fuels.

Oxygen is released into the air by plants through the process of photosynthesis, which breaks down carbon dioxide into carbon and oxygen so that sugars and other carbohydrates can be made (using hydrogen and oxygen from water). Energy from sunlight is stored as carbon bonds in carbohydrates, and can be released by metabolizing (re-oxidizing) these molecules. The two processes (photosynthesis and metabolic oxidation) are the basis for virtually all life on Earth.
