Well, I would personally recommend Windows Movie Maker which you can download for free online. You can keep the video as a project and also save it as a 'wmv' (or another video format) file. So, if you want to change anything in the future, you can edit the project and then save it as a wmv (or something else) file again. I love Windows Movie Maker - it's so simple and you can create so many different things with it. Note: If you want your video to play on a proper Media Player, then you must save it as a normal video format such as wmv, avi etc.

Windows movie maker is a pretty good, and free video editing program which is part of the default install on many XP machines. Look for it in the start menu programs list. (by default its not in accessories/entertainment like you might think, but in the root of the programs list)
