The platen is normally the long, cylinger shaped bar that the paper feeds accross that applies pressure to the paper (causing a firm, sturdy section on the paper) that allows the printhead and ink ribbon combo to apply ink and create image to the paper. Analogy - Getting a tattoo on your bicep: The tattoo gun and artist would be the printhead/ink ribbon combo. The bone in your bicep wrapped with your muscle would be the platen. Your skin is the paper. No need to tractor-feed your skin, the tattoo artist will handle the mechanics. lol
Hope this help!

A dot matrix is an impact printer. A scanner is not a printer.
Technically, yes. A dot matrix printer has a print head with small pins on it. While printing the pins fire, striking a ribbon between the print head, the paper and a platen, causing a dot to appear on the paper. These dots make up the image on the paper.

No, a dot matrix printer has small pins that hit a ribbon of ink. A laser printer uses toner type ink.
