There are two main definitions for resolution:

1- a decision to do a certain thing is a resolution; "I made a new years resolution to be a better person"

2- the amount of graphic material/detail that can be shown on a computer screen; "My computer monitor has a resolution of 1280 x 960"

It depends on the context. In relation to computers - its often applied to computer screens. The higher the resolution - the smaller the pixels are that make up the image (and the finer the detail).
