In regards to a server a Back Plane <not plate> is almost always used for connection of expansion cards like PCI or PCI Express slots. I/O Devices of any kind are usually connected via back planes due to the low profile nature of most modern servers.

They can also be used as a backplane for storage devices like SATA or SAS hard drives.
