On a computer, icons are little pictorial representations of things. Basically, they are just tiny pictures. These pictures represent programs or commands, and you click on them to do what you want.
A novel application would be if you used a computer as a restaurant point of sale terminal, and the computer had a touch screen. Instead of typing prices on a standard keyboard or cash register, you hit icons that look like the food you are selling. So you might hit a picture of a hamburger, a picture of French fries, and a picture of a softdrink. Then you hit an icon that says Total on it. The computer then prints out a receipt on the receipt printer, and sends the order to a computer in the kitchen where kitchen staff can prepare the items. Using icons on the terminal makes it easier to use untrained staff to work the counter.
