It involves making an image where each section of the image has a different(or no) effect when clicked/moused over.

The ImageMap control is used to hold an image that is used to map out regions on that image to provide links to other pages based on the part of the image that is clicked. Image Button provides image on the button which is used to create a good user interface.
A Direction map of an image is a representation of the direction of gradients within the image. It shows the orientation of edges or changes in intensity in different parts of the image. This information can be useful for tasks like edge detection and texture analysis in image processing.
The image generated by radar is typically called a radar image or radar map.
It is used when creating image maps. You are basically telling the map that is to be used in conjunction with the image. You can set up a map with co-ordinates of the places you want to be able to click or show text for. You then tell the image to use that map with the USEMAP attribute.
In HTML speaking it is called mapped image, you have image mapped that have link. The HTML tag for this is : <map name="..."></map> and to apply it on a image you add the attribute usemap="#mapName"

Hard to know without seeing it, but doublecheck your code and make sure your map id tags correspond, and that you have not accidentally cut off your close map code. Try an online image mapper like image-maps.com if you are unsure where you went wrong.
