Changing from one file format to another. A few examples:

• converting tiff image file to a jpeg image file
• converting raw image file to a jpeg image file
• converting wordperfect document file to a word document
• converting word document file to an openoffice document file
• converting excel spreadsheet file to an openoffice spreadsheet file
• converting windows media sound file to an mpeg sound file
• etc.

Note: both formats must be capable of storing similar things. An image file can be converted to a different image file format, but not to a spreadsheet file format or sound file format.
