Modern human life is full of computers.

Not only does almost every modern home have at least one PC (and many have many more), computers are part of many other devices everywhere.

Modern kitchen appliances, washing machines, cars, TV sets and mobile telephones, heating and cooling systems and many other common devices in the home contain computers in some shape or form. Outside the home, computers are found in cars, in traffic lights, increasingly in street lights, in petrol station pumps - just about everywhere.

Most of these computers are designed for a small number of applications, often just for one very specific task (such as controlling traffic lights). General-purpose computers such as PC or laptop equipment executing one or more of countless possible applications are less numerous, but with the strongly growing presence of smart phones and tablet computers, who fall into the same category of general-purpose computing devices, the distinction between dedicated computers (often called embedded systems) and general-purpose PC blurs and disappears.

My kitchen radio, for example, contains a computer that can execute 'apps' to display the weather forecast, display Facebook content, and perform many other task in addition to the comparatively mundane task of playing FM or digital broadcast radio.
