Latent defects are those defects that still remain in the software product even when delivered to the customer.

These can be identified effectively with Inspections. Regarding the true volume of latent defects shipped with a product to users, in most cases this can never really be determined. We do not yet have the ability to decisively determine the real number of defects shipped with a product. We can project total defects based on other characteristics in the process or we can assume zero defects based on other process data and patterns, but we cannot prove it. For example, we can analyze error depletion curves prior to delivery to make a prediction of latent defects after delivery.

What does a contract cover if it states latent defects?

Well, a latent defect would be any defect not previously detected or immediately visible, so the contract would cover that. Normally that means that the warranty covers defects that are not noticed until later, but could have been present at the time of sale.

How do latent defect failures affect mission performance?

Latent defect failures can severely impact mission performance by causing unexpected malfunctions or system breakdowns that compromise operational effectiveness. These defects often remain undetected until critical moments, leading to delays, increased costs, and potential mission failure. The unpredictability of such failures can undermine reliability and trust in the systems being utilized, ultimately jeopardizing overall mission success. Proactive measures, such as rigorous testing and maintenance protocols, are essential to mitigate these risks.
