loyalty
Since the United States was just forming some probably felt loyal to their town/state first and then to the 13 colonies. One of the weak points to the Articles of Confederation was that state and local loyalty was very strong and most people didn't have a national loyalty yet. So, if polls had been taken in 1780 I would guess they would state their state and local area.
George Washington believed that loyalty to the nation should take precedence over loyalty to individual states or local areas. In his Farewell Address, he warned against the divisive nature of regionalism and partisanship, emphasizing the importance of national unity for the country's survival and prosperity. Washington feared that strong local loyalties could undermine the collective strength and governance of the nation as a whole. He advocated for a sense of national identity that transcended local affiliations.
When people place loyalty to their region above loyalty to the nation, it is called "regionalism." This phenomenon often manifests in strong identification with local customs, culture, and interests, sometimes leading to demands for greater autonomy or independence. Regionalism can create tensions between local and national identities, especially in diverse countries.
a local area is a place which is normal to someone
Feudalism
With few roads and no traditions of unity, regionalism,or loyalty to a local area, weakened the new nations. Local strongmen, called caudillos (kow THEE yohs), assembled private armies to resist the central government.
A LAN or local area network is a computer network that includes computers in the local area. At my work location, there have been local area networks that serve the building. About 12 years ago, they connected our local area network to 5 or 6 other of our buildings located a mile or two away, and it was not local, anymore: It was then a wide area network, or WAN.
George Washington believed that loyalty to the nation should take precedence over loyalty to individual states or local areas. In his Farewell Address, he warned against the dangers of regionalism and factionalism, arguing that they could undermine national unity and the common good. He advocated for a strong federal government that would promote the interests of the entire nation, emphasizing that a united country would be more resilient and prosperous. Washington's vision was one of collective identity, where loyalty to the nation would foster peace and stability across all states.
