A core is a very small magnetic toroid, or doughnut. It can be magnetized in one direction or the other, so it represents one bit of memory. Core is also the term for the array of cores that make up main memory.

Very few computers use core anymore, as it is old, slow technology. Some people still refer to core, however, when they mean main memory. One advantage of core was that it was non-volatile, retaining its state through a power off state, but moderm memory does that as well with batteries and various "save to disc" strategies.

In layman terms, a core is basically a processor. If you have a dual-core processor, it is like having the capacity of two processors. A quad-core would be like having 4 processors. The Pentium II was kind of like the original dual-core, but instead of being the same size as a standard processor, it was literally two processors placed next to each other in a double sized unit. With today's technology being able to shrink the size of the transistors greatly, they are able to expand the capacity of processors now. The core is the part of the processors that contains the transistors. Technically speaking though, a processor contains more than just the transistors (core). It also has a cache, some have 2 caches and the bus connecting the cache(s) to the transistors.
