notch is the place of ram used to insert into the bump of the memory module or DIMM
DDR1 RAM typically has 184 pins and a notch located closer to the center. DDR2 RAM has 240 pins and a notch positioned more towards one side. You can also look at the labeling on the RAM module itself to identify whether it is DDR1 or DDR2.
Normally the location of the notch on the pin side.
since their has been many different types of ram created over the years a unique notch insures that you can only use the correct type of ram that works with your motherboard.
Pull out on the headlight switch knob after rotating one notch clockwise.
No, All types of RAM will not fit in any computer. certain RAM fits in Certain Computers. I do not know why they do this but i do know that a while back they had RAM sticks with a notch direcly in the middle and they could be put in backwords witch would couse it to smoke and not work properly. now they moved the notch down the stick a little so as what they say it can only fit "one way" but, i have accully managed to put one backwords and smoke like crazy but that was because the slot was cracked.
It is certainly not possible because laptop RAM has a different notch pattern and number of pins. Also, be sure not to mix different types of RAM such as DDR, DDR2, DDR3, RDRAM, etc. together. Actually, it IS possible, but you need an adapter... google 'notebook to desktop memory adapter'
The notch on the right identifies the voltage used by the module. The position of each notch not only helps identify the type of module, but also prevents the wrong kind of module from being used on a motherboard.
There are several different formats of RAM, including different types for PCs and laptops. Laptops typically require SO-DIMM RAM, while PCs typically require some form of DIMM RAM. SO-DIMMs have a varying number of pins from 100 to 256, the number of pins relates and notch spacing relates to the memory capability. DIMMs vary in pin numbers from 72 to 284.

Well a V-notch gives better accurate results when compared to rectangular notch.
No notch is still alive
It does not matter what direction you install something, it'll even work upside down.
