A partition is what i belive you are talking about is like a Bookmark. It tells the Bios or cmos that a certain area of a hardrive is used for storing data in a certain format you can have up to 4 partions on 1 harddrive and they are usally lables c, d, e, and f unless the label is allready taken or changed, when you make more than one partions you can select how much of the harddrive u want to section off for that partition and you can use each one to either just use for random storage or backups or you can load up to 4 operating systems or OS in each one it is more secure to have 1 partition for OS and one for backups or other information.
